We are Mark and Debra Swirmicky and we operate Lone Star Meadow Honey in southwest Iowa. This is our family business and we are passionate about protecting pollinators, growing local foods, and living a healthy lifestyle.
We moved to Glenwood, Iowa in 2003 and planted a wide variety of fruit trees the next spring. As the fruit trees started to mature, we saw very few pollinators so in 2007 we started beekeeping. The picture at the right shows Mark with those first 3 colonies.
By 2011, we were up to about 10 colonies and decided to start selling honey as a business. Since Debra is originally from Texas, and our house is in an Iowa meadow, Lone Star Meadow Honey was born. We currently have about 30 colonies and produce a wide variety of products from honey and beeswax. Both of us work the bees and manage the colonies.
Debra manages the business, makes all the products, and does 4 farmers’ markets a week in the summer months. In addition, you may find us at multiple craft shows during the fall, winter, and spring. She conducts beekeeping educational presentations at local schools and businesses. Her many talents include watercolor artist and intarsia. Also, she enjoys gardening and fishing.
Mark is retired from the Navy and currently works as a civil servant at Offutt Air Force Base. He helps Debra with the farmers’ markets and craft shows and is looking forward to making Lone Star Meadow his full time job in a few years. His interests are wood working, gardening, and fishing.
